Anthony Edwards has been suspended one game by the NBA for picking up his 16th technical foul of the season during Thursday night"s loss to the Los Angeles Lakers.
The Minnesota Timberwolves star was ejected Thursday via a double technical foul and surpassed 16 technical fouls this season. The league announced the punishment on Friday.
"Under NBA rules, a player or coach is automatically suspended without pay for one game once he receives his 16th technical foul during a regular season," NBA Executive Vice President and Head of Basketball Operations Joe Dumars wrote in a statement on Friday. "For every two additional technical fouls received during that regular season, the player or coach will be automatically suspended without pay for an additional game."
On Saturday, the NBA added a $35,000 fine to Edwards" punishment for "failing to leave the court in a timely manner" and throwing the ball into the stands at Crypto.com.
The incident occurred midway through the third quarter, when the young guard became incensed by a non-call. It was the third ejection of Edwards" career.
Edwards was ejected from a game in which his team could have certainly used him. He left with 18 points, six rebounds, five assists and zero turnovers, while none of his teammates had scored more than 10 points. The Lakers led 74-59 at the time.
The Timberwolves remained competitive into the fourth quarter, at one point cutting the Lakers" lead to three points, but L.A. ended up getting the 111-102 win .
Edwards missed Friday"s game against the Utah Jazz as a result of the suspension. Minnesota lost the game by one point.
Edwards has been shouldering a larger load than ever for the Timberwolves this season, averaging career highs in points, rebounds, turnovers and minutes per game, while also posting a career-high .535 effective field-goal percentage.
